Lyme disease refers to an ailment transmitted by bacteria found in tiny arachnids known as blacklegged deer ticks. If the ticks bite your skin, bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is spiral-shaped, can find its way into your blood stream to affect other parts of the body including the skin, the heart, the joints, and the nervous system. The common habitat for these ticks are forested and grassy regions where they can thrive for many years. Many people barely realize they have been bitten because the ticks are very tiny and they execute nearly painless bites.  The ticks can attach their blood-sucking mouthparts into the skin and may feed on their prey without interruption for many days or even weeks. If unnoticed for longer periods, they can continually transmit the bacteria’s pathogens into the human bloodstream. According to the CDC, if pregnant women contracts lime disease, there is a high likelihood for the pathogens to spread to their unborn children, which unfortunately could lead to stillbirth.

Symptoms

A number of symptoms of Lyme disease are similar to those found in other common ailments, which makes its diagnosis very difficult. Therefore, for many people who are bitten by blacklegged deer ticks, it could take many misdiagnoses until they are actually treated for the ailment. Furthermore, since Lyme’s disease affects people of all age groups, the number of people living with the condition is much higher than predicted. However, children and older adults are the most affected as well as professionals who spend most of their time outdoors, including park rangers, firefighters, ranch owners etc.

Initial Symptoms 

Within the first month of the tick bite, you will develop the following symptoms, which also vary from one person to the other.

– Persistent chills

– Unrelenting episodes of fatigue

– Severe fevers

– Mild headaches

– Mild pain in muscle joints

– Swollen and reddened lymph nodes

– Erythema migrans (EM) rash

When it comes to the EM rashes, around 70-80% of infected persons usually develop them after an average of 7 days. Since they are neither painful nor itchy, they can progressively spread out up to 30cm on the skin of various body parts. When the infected skin is touched, it usually feels warm, and broadens to a “bull’s-eye” appearance.

Later Symptoms (days to months after tick bite) 

Depending on the infected individual, after several days or months have passed since they were bitten, the following symptoms can be seen or felt:

– Rapid spread of EM rashes to various body parts

– Throbbing headaches

– Dizziness

– Facial palsy

– Short-term memory

– Stiff neck

– Swelling of the spinal cord and brain

– Pain in the nerves

– Agonizing pain and swelling of the joints, especially the knees and elbows,

– Lyme carditis (uneven heart beats)

– Shortness of breath

– Shooting pains and numbness in the limbs     I

It is important to note that the diagnosis of Lyme’s disease takes account of its clinical signs as well as the discovery of the causative bacteria in the patient’s blood. In most cases, antibiotics are used to treat the ailment.
